Thank goodness and halle-freaken-lujah it’s about to be summer here in Toronto! 🙌 Which means, we need all of the vegan sunscreens we can get our hands on.
If you’re not from Canada it gets real cold here in the winter months and after three long COVID winters we are in desperate need of some nice warm sunshine.
So with that being said, this is why we will also be in desperate need of some awesome vegan sunscreens to protect our winter skin from burning and to help prevent premature aging.
Here is a list of my favourite tried and tested vegan sunscreens. Sunscreens that don’t feel greasy, won’t leave you with a funny looking white cast, and are suitable for ALL skin tones! Doing makeup for Film & TV has allowed me to test out a ton of sunscreens and these ones really perform the best, time & time again.
Coola
Coola is a wonderful vegan & cruelty free suncare and skincare brand. They have a ton of different types of sunblocks ranging from sprays, mineral/zinc based, and sport selections. Coola uses 70% organic ingredients & they’re reef safe!
My personal favourites are:
- COOLA – Classic Face Sport SPF 50 White Tea $44 CAD – Size: 1.7 oz/ 50 mL
- COOLA – Classic Body Organic Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 – Guava Mango $25 USD – 6 FL OZ / 177 mL
Both of these two sunscreens go on clear and smooth, they’re non-greasy, & they do not run into your eyes/face while working out. Trust me I know this because my husband wears it on his runs & he has alopecia aka. No eyebrows or eyelashes or hair so this is a BIG plus for him.
Don’t Buy:
COOLA – Makeup Setting Spray Organic Sunscreen SPF 30 – It smells like pure alcohol, not pleasant at all. If it works as a setting spray I wouldn’t know because I couldn’t get past the smell unfortunately. 🤪 $36 USD – 1.5 FL OZ / 144 mL
Black Girl Sunscreen
Black Girl Sunscreen is a black owned brand that created a product that POC desperately needed! The fact that it took this long to get a product like this onto the market is shameful but, here we are and this brand is blowing up and the creators deserve all of the success. 👏
What’s amazing about this sunscreen is that it can actually be used on every single skin tone so you don’t have to be a POC and you can help support a black owned business all while protecting your skin.
I have used this sunscreen on a bunch of my actors and have loved its performance. They have recently launched a kids line and they don’t use any harmful ingredients & are paraben free.
BGS also carries a matte sunscreen which I am very curious to try.
Find these products at: Black Girl Sunscreen site and Target
Supergoop
If you haven’t heard of Supergoop Sunscreen then you must be living under a rock, or just not into beauty haha. But in all seriousness, Supergoop has quickly become a huge cult classic.
Their sunscreens are really good & like Black Girl Sunscreen, Supergoop’s best selling sunscreen is a clear gel so there is absolutely no white cast. Also they have a clean at Sephora stamp.
My personal favourites are:
- Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40 $45 CAD – 1.7 fl. Oz/50 mL
- (Re)setting Powder SPF 45 $40 CAD – 4.28 g
I have not tried the translucent powder on deeper skin tones yet so I’m not sure how it performs but I will keep you posted once I do. Powder sunscreens are wonderful ways to top up your SPF throughout the day when you’re already wearing makeup, AKA. A makeup artists dream product.
Sun Bum
Sun Bum is a really great company that carries a pretty large range of sun care & haircare products. They even have their own hand sanitizer (out pre-covid) & it smells like a tropical vacation. I carry it everywhere right now.
Their range of sunscreen lip balms are also vegan. Just be careful, the regular lip balms are unfortunately not vegan and contain beeswax.
All of their products are Gluten Free, Cruelty Free, Vegan (minus the ones mentioned above), Reef Friendly, Sulfate Free, & Paraben Free. AND, they smell amazing!!!!
My personal favourites are:
- Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray $15.99 USD – 6 fl. Oz./ 177 mL
- Original SPF 30 Sunscreen Lip Balm – Mango $3.99 USD – .15 Oz./ 4.25 g
- Hand Sanitizer $3.99 USD – 2 fl. Oz. / 59 mL
Find these products at: Sun Bum & your local grocery stores

We never knew about vegan sunscreens. Thank you for sharing.
YOu have a great list of vegan sunscreen here. I really like Sun Bum they do smell tropical.
There’s something about a tropical smelling sunscreen that just gets me.
This is a great list of Vegan Sunscreens. Sun bum is my go to favorite! I love that its reef safe and smells so good too!
Right?! Great product for us & great product for the environment!
Greatly appreciate this list of the best vegan sunscreens. I prefer brands that protect and are socially and environmentally responsible.
Right? We have the options to choose now, so I prefer those choices too!
This are great recommendations! I work outside and in the sun for almost 8 hours so I need sunscreens that are lasts a long time and is vegan friendly on my skin!
Working outside is such a blessing but a good sunscreen is a must!
I have been needing some good sunscreen for this summer, thanks for sharing!
I loved learning about these cruelty-free vegan sunscreens. It’s definitely that time of year to break out the sunscreen!
I cannot wait to be swimming in sunshine & sunscreen haha
We love Sun Bum products!
They’re so good
Great recommendations! We had no clue that these were vegan. Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure. So many great sunscreens popping up that are not only vegan but reef safe & skin safe
I love this list of best vegan sunscreens; something good for the planet, good for it’s creatures, and good for us. Fabulous.
Right?! What’s not to love?
When I need a bit longer protection than that I get from my homemade sunscreen I definitely turn to Sun Bum!
I love Sun Bum so much!
I’m usually one who just picks up whatever I find on sale at the grocery store, as far as sunscreen, but looking at all of these vegan options is causing me to rethink my bargain buying!
Totally get that haha! Some of these are actually quite affordable but they have way safer ingredients.
I love finding a sunscreen that doesn’t leave white goop all over me! I love mineral sunscreens, but that usually makes me look like I ghost unless it’s clear, haha!
That good old zinc making us all look funny but totally works.
These sound great! The only one I have ever heard about was Sun Bum. Now I want to try all of them! You did a great job of describing them.
Thank you so much! I think Sun Bum is in a lot of grocery stores & drug stores. Easily accessible!
I’m always looking for a sunscreen that is safer for my body. So many contain chemicals that I want to stay away from. I love how you list the links to purchase in your post.
Thank you so much! It’s crazy the chemicals that are in some sunscreens. I believe a Neutrogena & Aveeno (maybe others) sunscreen was recently recalled for containing a harmful chemical called benzene.
I need a new sunscreen so finding this post was perfect for me.
Perfect timing with the spring & summer coming up that I found this vegan sunscreen post.
Wow, I hadn’t heard of most of these and had no idea Supergoop was vegan! Thanks for the tips!
[…] Use at least a SPF 15 or higher sunscreen, applying 30 minutes before going out. Reapply after swimming or excessive sweating. Check out my blogging friend’s post, for the best vegan sunscreens! […]
Although I’m not vegan, it’s always good to know about healthy alternatives.
What interesting products to try! Great choices!
I’ve been on the lookout for safe sunscreens for my family. We have a peculiar issue in that most sunscreens leave a white, unflattering film on our brown skin. Do you know if any that is suitable for me?
Oh yes! I mentioned throughout this whole article actually
All of these sunscreens would be perfect for you guys, they all go on clear and both Supergoop & Black Girl Sunscreen are clear gels.
I’ve heard great things about Sun Bum!
These are great recommendations! I’ve been looking for a good vegan sunscreen.
Wow! Never thought about a vegan sunscreen before. Now, I will keep my eyes peeled 🙂
I’ll have to check a few of these out!
Great reviews. The only only I have heard of is Sun Bum. But I haven’t actually tried it. My look into it!
It’s a good list. I used SunBum. It was ok. Thank you for other recommendations:)
Curious to know what you didn’t like about it? Sun Bum is one of my favs.
I never thought of vegan sunscreen!! Thanks for the info! Definitely going to look into the sun bum!!
Such a good list of picks! I received a cools sample in one of my birchboxes and have been hooked ever since.
It’s so good right?
I have heard so many good things about sun bum. I actually bought some to try.
Oh this is perfect! I’ve been looking for some new sunscreens. I’m pretty big on finding ones that are reef safe and also no harsh chemicals. I’ve tried Sun Bum’s chapstick and love it. It’s so easy to find because it’s at Target. But I’ll have to check out COOLA. That sounds right up my alley!
I love that the better ingredients & reef safe sunblocks are becoming easier to access. Before it was just whatever was at the drug store. Sun Bum is so great, they all are
Great list! All of these look like great options. I have been looking for some vegan sunscreen for my face that is not too oily. Thank you.
My pleasure
Living in New Mexico, sunscreen is a must all year round. Many people I know won’t use anything on their skin, and use hats, long sleeves, etc. for sun protection – you know, like the Arabs.
When it’s hot all year round it’s definitely smart to wear longer thin layers. But when we’re swimming we need some sunscreen haha.
I always read ingredients on sunscreen before I buy it. I buy organic or stay as natural as possible. I don’t like putting chemicals on my skin.
Love that. Very important to know what we’re putting on our skin.
I did not know that these brands existed!! Thanks! Love the tip on the Sun Bum one as well for the hand sanitizer, I find the ones being made now for the most part smell terrible.
Totally! Some hand sanitizers are awful, takes my breath away
Very nice. I’m not vegan, but I am always mindful of cruelty free. BIPOC businesses also get my attention as it is about time that our culture gets a big reform!!!!
YES! So important to support the cause
I am so happy to see Sun Bum on the list!! Thanks!
My fave is sun bum! I love the smell and that it’s reef friendly.
It smells so great, like Australian Gold but vegan, CF, reef safe, GF and without all of those harsh chemicals.
I normally don’t wear sunscreen because I haven’t been anywhere that I needed any. I have some back up sunscreen I really like that is coral friendly and vegan/ cruelty free of course. But when I plan on buying a new one when I run out, this article will save me the research!!!!
I have not heard of these before. In fact, it never occurred to me to see if what I’m using is vegan! Great info, and I’ll have to take a look at mine and see if it makes the cut!
I love that there’s a vegan sunscreen now for POCs! That’s great! And I’m probably going for the gluten-free one from Sun Bum!
It was a much needed item for BIPOC for sure!
