To honour Black History Month, I thought it would be important to highlight & support Black Owned Vegan content creators, beauty brands, & vegan restaurants. The best way to encourage equality for all is to share and amplify the voices of those that are discriminated against.
This week I wanted to dive into 5 Black Owned Vegan Beauty Brands that you can easily find at Sephora!
Why Should We Try To Support Black Owned Brands?
Basically, every time we spend our dollars we are making a vote. Each vote contributes to the supply and demand of business. When we support smaller brands we are showing that there is a demand for brands like these. So simply, when we buy products from black owned businesses we are showing that the demand is there and more space needs to be made for these types of brands.
Why do we want that? Because if my black friends and family don’t have space in the world, well I just can’t sleep well at night, can you?
If you’d like to go more in-depth checkout this article 6 Reasons to Support Black-Owned Businesses by Green America.
This article goes into much further depth as to why it is so important but to summarize the article:
- Close the Racial Wealth Gap
- Strengthen Local Economies
- Foster Job Creation
- Bring Access to Communities
- Hold other Companies Accountable
- Visibility and Representation in the Green Economy
Why Should We Care About Vegan & Cruelty Free Brands?
I mean, to put it simply again, hurting animals and exploiting their purpose on this planet is ugly. We DO NOT need to do this and we can make conscious choices that reflect our moral integrity.

Let’s get to the good stuff shall we…
5 Black Owned Vegan Beauty Brands:
- Danessa Myricks – This woman is an incredibly talented makeup artist as well as a photographer & entrepreneur. Her makeup is used by makeup artists everywhere and the quality is phenomenal!
All of her products are always cruelty-free & every product is vegan except for Vision Flush. Her best-seller would have to be her ColorFix Cream Colors. The colour payoff is incredible and they come in matte, metallic, foil, & gloss finishes. Definitely check those out.
2. Lys Beauty – Founded by Tisha Thompson, another incredible mua turned beauty business entrepreneur. Tisha created this brand to cater to all skin types & tones and I must say, she has really out done herself! Her line is stunning.
Everything at Lys Beauty is always vegan and always cruelty free! Another incredible element to Lys Beauty is that they also focus on clean ingredients with minimal environmental impact. This is a brand to get behind people!!!
I can’t wait to start carrying the Triple Fix Serum Foundation in my makeup kit. This foundation has already won an Allure beauty award just last year. The range is wonderful and the finish is perfect for on camera.
3. Fenty Beauty – If you haven’t heard of Fenty Beauty or if you don’t know that this is Rihanna’s beauty line then I’m going to assume you’ve been living under a rock 🤪. I kid, I kid. But in all seriousness, Rihanna helped change the game when she called out & challenged the status quo of makeup companies.
When Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty she came out with a colour range of something like 50 different shades! That was unheard of and it shook the beauty world.
Everything at Fenty Beauty is cruelty free but not everything is vegan. An awesome feature about their website is that they clearly indicate which items are vegan in the ingredients list. So you can have peace of mind while you’re shopping.
My favourite Fenty Beauty items would have to be the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer because it honestly looks good on every single person! And I use the Eaze Drop Blurring Skin Tint in my makeup kit & for my personal day to day foundation.
You can also checkout my full review on the Fenty Beauty Ease Drop Blurring Skin Tint here.
4. Topicals – Was founded by Olamide Olowe and Claudia Teng who both wanted to create a more inclusive skincare line using the best ingredients. Having only launched in August of 2021, this skincare line has quickly become a cult fav!
You can buy their two best sellers in a cute little bundle from Sephora. It comes with their Brightening & Clearing Serum and their Hydrating Mask.
5. Briogeo – Nancy Twine created Briogeo with the mantra “Hair care for all – as it always should be”. We all have different types of hair and for a long time, hair care for people of colour was hard to find in main department like stores. Briogeo saw that problem and fixed it by ensuring that everyone would be able to find a haircare product that’s perfect for them.
Everything at Briogeo is cruelty free and all items are vegan EXCEPT for 1 item, the Limited Edition Honey Moisture Deep Conditioning Mask is not vegan.
I’m not big on scents but oddly enough, my favourite thing about Briogeo haircare is the way their products smell. Their ginseng and biotin line smells like The Body Shops Satsuma line and it is out of this world heavenly. Fortunately they use the cleanest and highest quality ingredients so you can rest assured that their fragrance is also top notch, I mean, as far as fragrance goes.
Their website also has a hair quiz so you can be matched to the products that truly fit your hair and your scalp!
If you’re looking to dip your toes into this brand, start with their Don’t Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Mask. You will LOVE it!
There you have it, 5 incredible black-owned vegan beauty brands you can shop at Sephora.
Have you tried any of these brands or products? If so, what did you think of them? Have any other suggestions for me to try? Leave them down below in the comments section.
You’re so right, every dollar is a vote–thanks for sharing this list of beauty brands that are worthy of support.
My pleasure! Thank you so much for the support
Great article
Loved this article. Well written

Love it!! How did I not know Rihanna had a beauty line?? I guess I have been living under a rock for several years. Especially because my makeup routine severely shifted after having kids and then again for the pandemic. LOL! But I think the new movement to emphasize and encourage support of black-owned businesses is fantastic. Some stores even make it easy to spot brands with black owners with special product labels or filters on their websites. I love your idea to create a post about this too!
haha Stop! I totally would have thought that you knew about Fenty Beauty!!! I can totally relate to losing touch with makeup though. If I wasn’t an MUA I don’t think I would know much anymore myself. I did my makeup today for the 1st time in like, 4 months . I also am so appreciative of the new labels & filters. It makes conscious shopping so much easier
Yeah how awesome is it that we can so easily search for cruelty-free and vegan beauty products at places like Target now too?? Also, an idea for a future post: make up essentials for the person that doesn’t wear makeup lol! I’m a minimalist with my routine, and mostly do eyes, maybe some chapstick/lip balm. But I’m so at a loss for foundation, bronzers, blushes, etc. I’d love to see what you’d recommend for us minimalists lol!
Oh man, minimal is my jam. I am not a big fan of full glam. Love that idea and will definitely put it on my list of article ideas. Thanks babe
I’ve heard of Fenty but not the others, so thank you for sharing. As a Black small business owner who also sells vegan and cruelty free products, I appreciate you sharing about other Black owned businesses!
Oh my goodness I need to checkout your stuff! Where do you sell them?
This is fantastic. I teach at an HBCU and many of my students struggle with finding brands that they can really love. Thank you so much!
It is still such an issue I know! Lys Beauty also prides themselves as being affordable while still being high quality. I know students will appreciate that!
I did not know about this and now know what to look out for
I’ve used Topical, and their masks are so rich feeling. I love them!
So great right?!
You are doing important work! We have such a history of unequal access to wealth. It is a huge obstacle to overcome and many small steps make a difference.
Thank you so much for such a supportive comment. It makes me so happy when ppl just get it!
Thanks for awesome suggestions by amazing women! I know Fenty. I’ll look for the others.
ALL amazing brands deserve equal representation and promotion especially small start-up businesses with great products competing against big business that are having a hard time getting the word out!
Totally! It’s so sad that so many companies, especially black owned ones, aren’t as able to grow because they used to not have the opportunity to gain exposure. At least now with so much being online it is easier to find smaller businesses.
Great! I didn’t know about these products and companies. My appearance is very important to me. I want to look beautiful.
I am sure you already are beautiful just as you are
Awesome info! I had no idea about some of these companies!
I haven’t worn makeup in almost two years, but good information for those that do.
There’s also great skincare & haircare brands listed above as well, not just makeup.
I love that you put a spotlight on these brands. I don’t know if I’ve ever been in a Sephora. lol. It kind of intimidates me. I do like make-up, though, so I look forward to looking into these brands further.
Sephora can be a lot! TBH, I prefer to shop from them online anyways bc they usually carry more brands, you get more freebies/samples, & you don’t have to have a sales associate breathing down your back
What a fantastic blog post! Thank you so much for making me discover these great entrepreneurs. I will now have to check them out. ❤️
My pleasure! There are so many great black owned vegan brands out there that we just don’t hear about.
This is an awesome post! I love Fenty (and Rihanna). Gotta try some of these other brands.
She’s so great! She recently started a foundation named after her grandparents to help fight climate change.
As a black woman I appreciate this post very much. First because you’ve let me in on some good stuff and second, I appreciate that you’re promoting a minority group. Thank you.
My honest pleasure. I get to work with so many great brands as a makeup artist and I know that they don’t get the exposure that they deserve.
Wow, I love powerful woman you do awesome things!
I didn’t even realize that these are also all female owned businesses too! Go Ladies!!!
