I donโt know about yโall but I kinda plan my vegan travel according to where I can eat & discover new vegan restaurants. I like to try to solely support vegan restaurants rather than vegan option restaurants when & if I can. So while Iโm planning my trips I like to search for vegan restaurants around all of the locations Iโll be staying or visiting.
Iโve been travelling to New York for the past 7+ years so I have acquired quite the list of amazing vegan restos one must check out & Iโve included some honourable mentions also worth popping into for a bite.
Usually Iโll stay in the Lower East Side in either an AirBnB or a Hotel. I like that area because itโs got a chill trendy vibe & itโs New York, everything is walking distance or a Subway ride away.
Letโs get to it, My Top Vegan Travel Restaurants in New York Cityโฆ
1. Hangawi –
Atmosphere: This place is phenomenal. Itโs set like a traditional Korean house/resto & they ask that you take your shoes off upon entering & place them in the little cubbies in the front, which I love (except in the winter because the floors get a little wet & your feet get cold).
Then youโre seated at your Chabudai table (These are traditional Korean tables in which you sit on a cushion or in the floor). The atmosphere in general is very tranquil & even though itโs a busy restaurant it doesnโt feel chaotic.
The Food: is bomb dot com. My first experience here was on Christmas Eve in 2014 & the place was packed but the food did not disappoint. Every thing that came out was delicious & Iโm not going to lie, I made resos to come back the next day for lunch.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ I make sure I go back every time Iโm in NYC
Get The: Hangawi Dumplings โ fried (I just love dumplings)
2. Screamer’s โ
Atmosphere: Set up like a traditional New York pizzeria. When you enter, you’ll see a large menu posted on the wall, you’ll place your order, you can then wait in the few tables they have set up for dining & in no time youโre on your way (Or you can eat your slices there. They also have online ordering, etc).
I think their newer location may have more dining space, FYI.
The Food: Donโt even get me started. I want their pizza every single day. They have something like 18 different menu options & you can even build your own. The pizzas are on the more expensive side but they are also huge. They are truly a vegan fat kid dream.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ A must visit every time Iโm there
Get The: Margherita (Iโm a traditionalist what can I say). My husband loves the Buffalo Cauliflower. (both pictured above)
3. Jajaja –
Atmosphere โ Fresh, clean, & trendy. Lots of natural wood, mint & earthy tones. Simple & catchy neon signage. Super busy but cozy & fun vibes. Definitely instagramable atmosphere. The LES location has a cute little takeout entrance for quick orders (not sure if the other locations have this as well).
The Food: I went here with a group of 6 & every single one of us was impressed with our meals. Portions are perfect size, spice is indicated on the menu, & a ton of GF options.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ I just discovered this place on my last visit & I cannot wait to try it again. And probably again and again.
Get The: Street Tacos โ Chorizo or Crispy Chayote Fish
4. Blossom –
Atmosphere: The restaurant is a more upscale vegan cuisine but not fine dining. Perfect for cute dates & celebrations. The decor is very clean, neutral, & modern. There is a ton of seating and a cute little bar near the front entrance.
The Food: Delicious. So freaken yummy. Everything always seems so fresh & planned out. The dishes are also very visually appealing. Desserts are delicious & decadent.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ I wish I had a location near me because I would love to make this the usual date spot with my hubby.
Get The: Crispy Artichokes or Hand Cut Fries w. Truffle Aioli (I know telling vegans to get fries at a vegan restaurant but their fries are deadly)
5. Caravan of Dreams –
Atmosphere: This place is really special. You should click on the link to their site & check out how much heart is poured into this place. Their founder really wanted to make this the most conscious & healthy art-loving restaurant around.
They also have live music nights & a cute little patio.
The Food: Everything they serve is organic, kosher & bio-photonic. They also have a very large menu as they have raw foods, brunch, apps, smoothies, juices, teas, entrees, etc.
The founder is of Spanish decent & you can definitely see that reflected in many of these tasty dishes.
Overall Rating: 4/5 โ I love everything about this place but sometimes big menus can be overwhelming.
Get The: Brunch โ Prix Fix โ Breakfast Burrito
6. Dunwell Doughnuts –
Atmosphere: Typical cute little bakery/coffee shop vibes. Order at the counter & take your stuff to go or have a seat & enjoy.
The Food: All of their doughnuts are fresh & handcrafted daily with organic ingredients. All of their products are free of animal or animal derived ingredients.
They have also partnered with Brooklyn Roasting Company to offer the best quality Fair Trade, Organic, Rainforest Alliance certified coffees & espressos hand roasted daily.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ I LOVE DOUGHNUTS!!!
Get The: Their powdered doughnuts are deadly (pictured above)
7. Double Zero –
Atmosphere: Sophisticated & charming. Beautiful high seating with an illuminated wine wall & an old school wood burning pizza oven.
This place is beautiful & perfect for dates & chic gatherings.
The Food: Pizza, Pasta, & Salads and they are all incredible. Just take a look at their instagram to see the quality of their dishes. They have an extensive wine menu as well.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ I also really love pizzaโฆ & pasta for that matter, or maybe just carbs.
Get The: Margherita Pizza (The basil is so freaken fresh!) (pictured above)
8. Urban Vegan Kitchen –
Atmosphere: My husband & I lucked out finding this place. We were actually going to try a walk-in at Blossom only to find that this Blossom had turned into Urban Vegan Kitchen.
This place has Soul! They have graffiti art, string lights, a bar & a DJ booth, they have art & photos of musicians & animals all over the walls.
Overall itโs a really cool feel good vibes place. Itโs also a black owned business so supporting this joint really does more than just feed your belly.
Checkout my article “5 Black Owned Vegan Beauty Brands” where I explain why it is so important to help support black owned businesses.
The Food: Yummy, greasy, comfort food that nourishes the soul. Thereโs a mix of waffles & โchickenโ (pictured above) and quesadillas. They also have a full bar with spirits, wines, & beers.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ Love the laid back โCome As You Areโ feel.
Get The: Korean BBQ Wings or the Poโ Boy
9. Bodhi Kosher Vegetarian Restaurant –
Atmosphere: Very typical Chinese restaurant vibes.
Lots of seating & a private dining area in the back for parties or larger groups.
When you first walk in thereโs a little reception area for take-out/cash register. They also prepare some of the foods there & have a mini fridge for drinks.
The Food: Known for their interpretations on classic Chinese dishes. They claim to be the original vegan dim sum kitchen, which is pretty cool. The menu is huge & they even have vegan sushi.
There are also a ton of Gluten Free options.
Overall Rating: 4/5 โ everything is spot on
Get The: General Tsoโs Veg Chicken or Pan Fried Dumplings
10. Bar Verde –
Atmosphere: Same owner as Double Zero (right next door actually), this is Matthew Kenneyโs take on Mexican/Latin dishes. Small New York venue with a big open bar. Itโs colourful but dark & classy.
(As I’m updating this article, I’ve noticed that Matthew Kenney no longer has Bar Verde listed on his website as one of his restaurants. I couldn’t find much info on it but thought I’d throw that in there as a note.)
The Food: A complete Mexican/Latin menu equipped with all of the guac & salsas one can dream of. Lots of sharing plates like Tostadas & Ceviche, along with Tacos & Bowls. Matthew Kenney truly is a vegan food genius & this menu definitely reflects that.
Overall Rating โ 5/5 โ another gorgeous date spot or brunch
Get The: Esquites and the Maitake Tempura Tacos
11. Red Bamboo –
Atmosphere: Clean & welcoming. The place is small & always busy. I lucked out once by going for lunch & didnโt have to wait but every other night the place is packed.
The Food: Theyโre known for their innovation in mock meats, specializing in vegan comfort food & Asian dishes.
Overall Rating: 5/5 โ hits that savoury craving
Get The: Theyโre famous for their Barbecue Buffalo Wings (pictured above) & their Rootbeer Float is pretty good too.
12. Kajitsu –
Kajitsu means “fine day”, or “day of celebration” in Japanese.
Kajitsu site
We have chosen the name Kajitsu hoping that a visit here will always be a special occasion for our guests.
Atmosphere: This vegan restaurant is really special. Having a Michelin Star this is a more upscale, fine dining type of restaurant.
The interior is very clean & minimal. They even have a high top section where you can dine while watching the chef prepare the dishes.
The Food:
There is a ten-course โOmakaseโ ($120) menu including seasonal dessert and matcha as well.
The menus change monthly, incorporating seasonal vegetables and nama fu, an important protein source for Shojin cuisine made from wheat gluten and rice flour. Most of our dishes are prepared with some key ingredients in Japanese cuisine, such as soy sauce(includes wheat), mushrooms, sesame and kelps, which cannot be substituted.
Overall Rating: 5/5 – I highly recommend this place for it’s incredible high quality food experience.
Get The: Since it’s a prix fixe establishment you’ll get to experience their entire menu!
13. Eleven Madison Park –
Eleven Madison Park is a fine dining restaurant located in the heart of New York City. The restaurant overlooks Madison Square Park, one of the most beautiful parks in Manhattan, and sits at the base of a historic Art Deco building on the corner of East 24th Street and Madison Avenue. Located here since 1998, it underwent a full-scale renovation and redesign in the summer of 2017.
The restaurant has been owned by Chef Daniel Humm since 2011 and during that time it has evolved considerably, both in food and in experience. Our tasting menu consists of entirely plant-based courses. Guests can also visit the bar for a more abbreviated version of the tasting menu, light snacks, or simply for a cocktail or glass of wine.
Every dinner purchased at Eleven Madison Park allows us to provide meals to New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity. These meals are served from the Eleven Madison Truck, which is operated by restaurant staff, in partnership with Rethink Food. To learn more, please follow the link here.
Atmosphere: Gorgeous, crisp & clean! This place is fine dining at its FINEST. The vegan restaurant has taken New York by storm and there are usually long wait lists to even make a reservation. So if you’re planning to check this place out, I highly suggest you book your reso well in advance.
As the hype dies down I’m sure resos will be easier to acquire but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Definitely would not recommend walk-ins.
The Food: The menu is prix fixe & because this is such an upscale dining experience, expect the dishes to be elaborate & on the smaller portion size.
Overall Rating: 4/5 – This place is incredible. It’s pricey too. Dinner starts at $320+ per person.
I would have given them 5/5 but there’s this rumour that they have a secret room that they call “the meat room” where they apparently serve the uber wealthy whatever they want.
I don’t know if it’s true or not but I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s NYC and where there’s money there’s a way unfortunately.
Honourable Mentions โ
- Dirt Candy โ Never been but heard good things. Only problem is that itโs not strictly vegan & they do serve dairy.
- Orchard Grocer โ Vegan grocer & sandwich/quick bites shop.
- The Butcherโs Daughter โ This spot is lacto/ovo vegetarian but they have a ton of vegan options.
Have I missed a vegan travel spot. Please share with me below your favourite vegan restaurants in NYC!

The food at Jajaja is simply beautiful! I love the plating and garnishing style–it totally goes with the aesthetic of the interior.
Doesn’t it? I really love how bright and fresh everything is.
Interesting! I’m not vegan (not even vegeterian) but I try to cut down on meat where possible. Been living in Japan where it really is immensely difficult to be vegan. Met quite a few people who were vegan before moving here but turned back to vegeterianism! Good to hear it’s easier in other parts of the world.
That is interesting indeed! I have a bunch of friends from Japan who are vegan. I guess if the will is strong there is always a way. But yes, in general some areas of the world are easier to source vegan foods. One of my Japanese go-to’s is vegetable sushis. I could eat that every day!
We plan our vacations around food as well. There are so many fantastic places to discover.
Right?! Once you figure out the food you can figure out the rest haha
What a great list! You have such a diverse selection of vegan restaurants on here, there’s really something for everyone to enjoy!
Aw I love to hear that! And yes, NYC has a great selection for all budgets & tastes.
Those donuts look divine! Thanks for sharing this post–I can’t wait to try these spots on my next trip to NYC.
Don’t they look so yummy. I want one now!
Such a great list and a phenomenal description of each of the restaurants. Thank you for sharing.
Tysm!
Yum ALL of these look like amazing places to eat. I appreciate knowing where to eat before I visit a city!
Right?! It’s how I have to travel, food first, accommodations later haha.
That is quite a list. Isn’t funny how we plan our travels around food. I’m always on the lookout for authentic local cuisine – In NYC that might be everything!
Haha right? Such a populated bustling city, definitely all cuisine is local now!
These looks like great choices and I loved the idea of your favorites!
thank you! One of my fav cities for vegan eats for sure!
Yum, Yum, and Yum. Those donuts look amazing!
I know right? Doughnuts > most things hehe
What a refreshing change of pace to see restaurant reviews for “non traditional” food choices! I look forward to traveling again soon, and will definitely check out one of the restaurants from your list!
I can’t wait to travel either! Haven’t been anywhere since the pandemic started but I have a wedding in London in September so that will be my first trip since! Hopefully you can get out there soon too
That is quite a list!! Awesome job in organizing all the pertinent scoop for us!
I’d love to try a good vegan restaurant. Definitely on my Summer to do list.
Fortunately more and more amazing ones keep popping up!
Now I’m craving that delicious-looking pizza from Screamers. Although most of the restaurants look fantastic.
I know! You can’t beat greasy New York pizza!
These look like great restaurants. And such a complete list. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for checking it out. I can’t wait to go back one day soon I hope.
Great list – I’m not Vegan but have been making more Vegan choices. Will have to check a few of these out!
That’s awesome to hear! It’s so much more convenient nowadays with so many more places offering plant based items. Thanks for your comment ๐
These all look great. At first I was trying to pick my favorite but then it became too hard. From pizza to donut to the burrito. All looks delicious and like fun. Thanks.
haha right?! It’s hard for me too. Right now I’d choose pizza though haha. Thanks for the comment ๐
Wow!! So many options!! I would love to try every one of them!! My kids are kind of vegan, they eat meats though lol. They are allergic to wheat, eggs, dairy and peanuts. So I would like to know was any of them also have gluten free as well as vegan menus?
Oh man must be fun & difficult finding places to eat sometimes! But yes!!! Nearly all of these restaurants have gluten free options thankfully. I have a gluten intolerance so most of the time I avoid it as well. I think the only ones that didn’t seem to have GF options were Screamers Pizzeria & Dunwell Donuts.
My dream is to find a list like this of vegan restaurants all over the country…hint hint, but wow, now I need to visit NYC just to try um ALL of these. I love the details you include and straight away I could imagine why I needed to visit each one, starting with donuts and working my way through. On my way to see family in Connecticut next year, I’m stopping in NYC just for food. We are newly vegetarian, we don’t seem to have anything super near us, but we can usually find food anywhere we eat out, BUT there is something about a restaurant that is geared to vegan versus a couple of dishes that fit. I’ve pinned this post and can’t wait to peruse more posts.
Thank you so much for your amazing comment! My goal is to definitely explore as many vegan restaurants around the globe as possible. And I really do love supporting vegan venues for so many reasons but exactly that, for having more than just a couple of dishes to offer. I hope you get to try some of these places out on your road trip. Sounds like fun!
What a great list! I was in NYC for the first time this past December, I can’t wait to go back! I need to save this post! Thank you!
I know! I’m hoping in the nearer future I’ll be able to get back there too. Thanks so much for your comment ๐
Although I won’t be traveling to NYC anytime soon I highly appreciate all the recommendations. My daughters are vegan and this gives me some ideas of trendy places to check out their menus.
Oh thank you so much. And yes, your daughters will definitely love these places then. <3
What a great blog! I wish I lived near NYC or would be visiting soon. I’ll have to scroll through your blog to see if you’ve done Seattle yet (near where I live). My son is vegan and while I’m not, I’m moving more to mostly plant based and am always on the lookout for a great vegan restaurant.
Oh I love that! I actually haven’t been to Seattle yet but when I do you can be certain I will search for those good Seattle vegan joints.
Iam a vegetarian and I will surely use your list when I visit New York. I love donuts.
Haha Right?! Donuts over cupcakes for me ๐
Wow everything sounds really great!! Thanks for sharing several options!
Thanks so much for your kind words <3
My mouth was watering as I read through your reviews of the Vegan restaurants in New York. I havenโt been to New York in years. But they way you described the restaurants has me now wanting to reconsider my Vegan journey. Next time I visit New York. Iโll be keeping the Vegan restaurants in mind.
Your comment made me so happy! Thank you!!! I have to admit when I was writing this I kept saying to my husband how badly I wanted to go back and eat all of the foods haha!!!
Oh i was supposed to go to New York this summer and would have loved to go to all these places! Def saving this for when I get back there!
I know! The world has been so crazy but hopefully soon we’ll all be able to visit our favourite places again. I was hoping to get back there this summer too.
Thank you! Which restaurant would be the best to visit with a non-vegan pal?
Oh I love this question! I think Double Zero is a great one because it has the staples, Pizza & Pasta. Or Bar Verde or Jajaja because everyone loves Mexican food.
Such a great list! Thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to check out a few of these on my next trip. Are there any which reservations are strongly recommended?
Thank you so much! I think Blossom you want a reso for sure. I can’t remember if Hangawi takes resos but they’re also always busy. I think for the most part the more sit down “classier” joints are the ones to call ahead for. The more grab and go’s or junk food style usually has seating available.
