Happy Vegan Birthday!!!
This past week we celebrated my mom’s 62nd birthday! Woohoo!!!
My mom has been vegan now for over 8 years. I had tried for many years before that to get her to go vegan but, we all kind of have our “ah ha” moment on our own time. She had been vegetarian at one point but it wasn’t until she really took a look at her health that she decided to switch to a vegan lifestyle.
Notice that I didn’t say “diet”? If you’d like to learn more about what I’m getting at, checkout my last article, Veganism Isn’t A Diet. Going vegan for your health is awesome but it doesn’t stop there.
So anyways…
Basically, vegan birthdays look like every other birthday, just veganized! Yup, it’s really that simple, haha.
You want a cake? Great, there are so many vegan bakers or bakeries nowadays or even free vegan cake recipes online, that the cake part is probably the easiest part.
In fact, I have a wicked & super easy vegan chocolate cake recipe that you can checkout here.
Get this, we got my mom a VEGAN ICE CREAM CAKE this year! I haven’t had an ice cream cake since I was a little kid, before I went vegan. So that was really cool. If you live in the Hamilton area, checkout Fairly Frosted Bakery!
If you’re hosting a party for kids & want to do little personal cakes instead, give this yummy vegan cupcake recipe a try. You can change/colour the frosting however you want to!
Ok, now that we have to most important part covered…
What next?
What about the other foods? Well, I guess depending on the type of vegan birthday you’re having it will help steer the direction of the foods you choose.
A traditional fun kids birthday party might include things like pizza, hot dogs, burgers, etc. Well guess what? Those are ALL veganizable!!!
So many pizza joints have vegan options nowadays. If you have a local Pizza Pizza, they have a great vegan cheese & pepperoni. They even make vegan chicken nuggets & sandwiches, how cool is that?
If you haven’t tried Beyond Meat yet, DO IT! They make vegan ground, vegan burger patties, & vegan hot dogs/sausages. Not a fan of Beyond? Try Impossible Meats instead.
Better yet, checkout this amazing article, 40+ Vegan Party Food Ideas from Nutriciously.com.
Now that we have the cake & the food sorted, we need to think of some decor right?
Vegan Birthday Decor
You should be happy to know that birthday decor is pretty much vegan, haha! Why wouldn’t it be right?
Some things to keep in mind though, leather tassels, feather accents, silk napkins, things like that aren’t vegan. So try to keep that in mind when shopping for some bday decor.
Also to note; I freaken love the look of the new style of balloons on balloons on balloons. It’s gorgeous BUT, they’re really bad on the environment. So if you can source eco friendly, biodegradable balloons, that would be the best option.
Checkout this article from Citizen Sustainable where they source 6 Eco-Friendly Balloon Alternatives.
Gifts
What do you buy a vegan though?
Honestly, that just depends on the vegan. Are they a mom? A little boy? Do they like experiences or physical gifts? Budget? Etc…
To help keep it simple, here are 3 great vegan gift ideas for all budgets:
There are so many wonderful ways to celebrate a vegan’s birthday. These are just some simple basic tips to help get you on your way.
Did I miss something? We’re not the biggest party planners in my household, so if I missed an important birthday topic, let me know down below because I’m sure there’s a vegan answer for it!
Oh, one last thing to note; things like renting animals, petting zoos, reptile zoos, etc, are not vegan. These poor creatures are captive & they get frightened too. So please keep that in mind when planning your children’s parties.
They won’t necessarily remember that petting zoo party they had when they were 5 but the animals will certainly remember being passed around all day long, crammed into tiny cages to transport to you, and then a lifetime of imprisonment.
Also, not all alcohol is vegan but, thanks to Barnivore.com you can simply search a brand & this database will tell you if the wine, beer, or spirits are vegan! Super great when gifting wines.
Great suggestions! I never really gave thought to other parts of the party needing to be vegan opther than the food (which looked delicious BTW).
Many people don’t realize that veganism is a lifestyle & it’s more than what is on our plates. But that’s ok, it’s all about progress and doing our best!
A vegan birthday party looks amazing! That cake wanted us to dive right in!!
Great suggestions for keeping the birthday celebrations completely vegan!
Thanks 😀
