I feel like Homer Simpson whenever I think about vegan donuts. I’ve never really had a big sweet tooth but you give me a vegan doughnut & I’ll be drooling with my head thrown back and mouth wide open.
Some people are cupcake people & some are doughnut people, am I right? 🤪
That being said, I feel like my love for donuts has allowed me to be a tiny bit of an expert when it comes to sourcing the best vegan donuts.
I’m not a big fan of a cakey donut but have you had a crepe doughnut? My goodness those are tasty. So, join me as I take you on…
A Vegan Donut Adventure
Vegan Donuts in NYC
Now, I’ve already shared with you all how much I LOVE Dunwell Doughnuts in my Vegan Travel New York Edition. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’m starting our donut adventure here, in NYC.
Dunwell Doughnuts are soft & fluffy. They are a classic artisanal donut. Their traditional doughnuts have a thin layer of that crispy, melt in your mouth icing. While their jelly filled doughnuts are covered in the softest powder coating & filled with a perfectly tasty jam.
It’s like heaven!
Now, I haven’t been to these other two but according to VegOut Magazine, Clementine Bakery & Peaceful Provisions are also worth checking out!
Alright, let’s take a stroll up north and checkout some…
Vegan Donuts in Canada
I might be biased because I live here but Canadians make good donuts. And one of my all time fav places happens to be about an hour drive from me in Niagara Falls.
Beechwood Doughnuts, home to one of the most delicious Coconut Cream Donuts I’ve ever tasted, and I don’t like coconut! Beechwood has about 19 over the top vegan donut flavours & they are all delicious.
My top picks: The Apple Fritter & the Coconut Cream.
Next up, let’s make our way to Hamilton, Ontario & visit Donut Monster!
Having one of your fav donut shops minutes away is both a blessing & a curse! But Donut Monster’s donuts are legit. They change their menu quite often so there’s always something new to try.
Be mindful though, some of their donuts aren’t vegan but the vegan options are very clearly marked! I also love that they have more vegan options than not.
My top picks: What can I say, I’m a fritter girl, both their apple & rhubarb fritters are incredible!
Where to next? Toronto!!!
More specifically, Machino Donuts!
Machino Donuts are next level. They have some of the most decadent & original flavours. Their donuts are also massive & the stuffed donuts are packed with the creamiest yummiest jams & custards.
They also like to change up their menu options monthly. Next month they’re featuring a Mango Matcha Donut, a Peanut Banana Bread, & a Chocolate Churo Cronut! Along with their regular assortment of vegan donuts of course.
My top picks: The Simpson’s Donut is a classic fav & their Chocolate Cheesecake!
Since we’re still in Toronto, I wanted to mention another great vegan doughnut shop.
Tori’s Bakeshop offers more than just donuts. They have an insane selection of vegan pies, cakes, cookies & so much more! But they also offer THE ONLY cake style donut that I actually really like & bonus, they’re also gluten free.
Last but certainly not least, we travel to the West Coast to find the ultimate…
Vegan Donuts in LA
Possibly the absolute best doughnuts in the entire universe come from Los Angeles. I discovered Donut Friend about 6 years ago when I was on an LA vacation. As soon as I set foot inside my jaw dropped & I realized I was in heaven.
When I walked in I saw a pastry chef, beautifully piping the inside of a donut with the fluffiest whipped cream. Then she placed the juiciest fresh strawberries on top of the cloud like cream. She finished the other inside of the donut with more whipped cream & gently placed it on top of the strawberries, making the most beautiful artisanal donut I had ever seen!
If that wasn’t the most perfect thing to witness, I then discovered that we could create our OWN donuts too! You can choose all of your own fillings & ingredients. My husband made a whipped peanut butter with banana slices & toasted coconut flakes. And I got that beautiful strawberry cream one.
Let me share this, I love Donut Friend so much that whenever my husband is in LA without me (he travels for work), he will bring me home a box! That man will sit through an entire airplane ride with a box of fresh donuts on his lap. He doesn’t even take a peak or a bite! And then he delivers them to me! 🙌
Checkout my Vegan Travel Los Angeles article for more awesome LA recommendations.
As you can tell, doughnuts excite me! Haha
Which is why I thought it would be fun to share my favourite vegan donut shops with you all. Have you been to any of these places before?
Are you a cupcake or a donut person?
Let me know in the comments down below! And if you have any other vegan donut shops to check out, tell me tell me!
Also, I joke a bit using both doughnut & donut throughout this article. Do you write donut or doughnut? Apparently donut is now used world wide but as you can see in a bunch of these shops names, many places still like to go by the doughnut spelling.
Yuuum-mee! You know what my biggest struggle with vegan doughnuts is? That so many places make the cake kind. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good old-fashioned. But It’s hard to find vegan doughnuts that have been fried. This is why I love making the trip out to Donut Friend. There are two locations here in the LA area. And one is pretty close to the UCLA football games we attend. 😉 Universal City Walk recently added a Voodoo Donuts and they have a surprising selection of vegan options on their menu. The kids love getting the Voodoo guy. And there are a couple of other options we like, too! But those Canadian options look amazing!!
It’s true! So many vegan doughnuts go for the “healthier” cake style but nothing beats a good old fried donut! I’m thankful there are a ton of junkfood vegan donut options out there now too haha.
I’m going to have to checkout Voodoo Donuts the next time I’m in LA now!
That’s a huge variety of donuts! You really love donuts, don’t you? Elton seems to like them too 😀 And that’s so cute your husband brings you a box from LA.
I like that little world map you’ve included. There’s a vegan donut café called Round in Helsinki – you must visit! I love a classic chocolate donut.
Oooh! Thank you for the Helsinki donut tip. Will definitely look for Round when I venture there.
Isn’t Elton funny? He pretty much thinks he’s getting everything we eat but there are certain foods he really tries to go for, Donuts being one of them haha.
YUM! These all look so wonderful! Vegan donuts look tasty!
I’m not a big donut eater, but these look amazing. I never knew donuts weren’t vegan.
So many different ingredients can go into Donuts. Things like, eggs, milk, honey, cream cheese, bacon even. The list is endless. But thankfully, all veganizable so no animals have to be harmed to enjoy a good donut!
I haven’t eaten donuts in years. Besides vegan I need refined sugar free and gluten free. Almost impossible to find all three in a donut!
Ooh you would like Tori’s Bakeshop donuts then. They’re gluten free & healthy.
Wow, these vegan donuts look amazing! I want to try them out!
Oh my! Those vegan donuts would satisfy any sweet tooth for sure!
These all look delicious, I can’t believe they’re vegan! My girls were looking at this with me and decided the brown/pink zebra stripe donut looks the best 🙂
Ooh… your girls have a good eye for those big vegan donuts! They’re so yummy!
