It’s funny because whenever I plan or think of travelling I always check to see where the vegan restaurants are located, especially in relation to where I’m staying. My husband tends to be skeptical that we’ll find vegan restaurants but I always pull through, no matter where we end up. Vegan travel has come a very long way and I’d like to welcome you on my quick little trip to Amsterdam with the hubs.
We really lucked out with the AirBnB we booked. I like to switch up whether I’m staying in a hotel or AirBnB, in this case I wanted to be on the beautiful canals and I wanted to spend a few nights living life like a local. The place we found was normally booked up for long-term expat rentals but we just happened to luck out when it was available!
This place was right on the canals and right in the heart of everything. When we arrived the homeowner greeted us, checked us in and even gave us some local tips and information. Apparently the day before we arrived was “King’s Day” (April 27th) and the Netherlands, especially Amsterdam, throws an insane party where the whole town is decorated in orange and everyone is in the streets celebrates.
It’s a shame we missed it but our host told us the cutest thing, “I’m so sorry the town is such a mess right now. It was King’s Day yesterday and everything is just a mess. Normally it’s not like this”. Meanwhile, Aaron and I were just talking about how clean and beautiful the city looked, haha. We’re from Toronto, not that Toronto is a dirty city but it’s a big city and Amsterdam is a hell of a lot cleaner than Toronto!
After we got settled into our loft we wanted to explore and venture out for supplies, aka. vegan groceries. I did a quick yelp search and a few blocks from our rental was a small vegan grocer/café called Vegabond. So we decided to go for a stroll to checkout the canals & architecture and familiarize ourselves with the neighborhood.
We picked up some vegan snacks like vegan jerky, chocolates, marshmallows, stuffed croissants; we even found some vegan Stroopwafels which was fun to try. They even carried Linda McCartney’s vegan line which was my first time trying her foods. They were so great by the way.
We grabbed something to make for dinner that night because we weren’t sure where we were eating that night as we just arrived and a lot of things seemed to be closed that day.
New sweater I bought from the cutest local shop
The next day we spent exploring and shopping. Amsterdam has some of the cutest boutique shops; Aaron found a bunch of great men’s fashion stores too. Everything was a nice walk able distance making it a perfect city to do as the locals do.
We decided to make reservations for dinner at this unreal little vegan ramen joint called, “Men Impossible”. This was one of the best restaurant experiences on all of my vegan travel that I’ve ever had!
1. Men Impossible – (Hazenstraat 19H 1016 SM Amsterdam Netherlands)
Atmosphere: The restaurant has one big table with a beverage fridge on one side and a counter in the front. There is one adorable man who works there; he is the owner, chef, server/every position and he is incredible!
The Food: The menu is prix fix but you can choose between how many apps you get. Aaron and I both ordered the full deal and we were so happy we did. Even though the apps look quite simple, they were the tastiest concoctions I’ve ever had. I don’t normally like eggplant but the way this chef cooked and paired the eggplant was out of this world.
Then the ramen came and holy crap was it incredible. The chef told us that he came up with this deconstructed vegan ramen as the closest way to get the same taste and textures as traditional ramen but without the use of animal ingredients. Food like this is why I am such a fan of vegan travel; you just never know what you’re going to get to try.
Overall Rating: 5/5 – One of the absolute best restaurants I’ve ever been to!
Get The: Everything, don’t hold back just try the entire menu.
Hubs and I left Men Impossible feeling so satisfied and blown away. You MUST try this restaurant on your vegan travels.
Over the next few days we did some more touristy stuff like a boat tour through the canals where we learned about the different streets and buildings. We also checked out Body World because Aaron never got the chance to see it when it was in Toronto.
Continuing our vegan travel we ventured over to a place called “Vegan Junk Food Bar” and this place did not disappoint either!
Vegan Junk Food Bar – (They have a few locations in Amsterdam)
Atmosphere: This place is fun! It has a super cute punk rock meets Kawaii edge to it. There’s cute little graffiti signage and wall art, lots of seating and fun music.
The Food: Geez is this food delicious. It’s vegan junk food at it’s finest. Think cheese balls, popcorn shrimp, double decker burgers with black buns, truffle fries and loaded spicy fries and so much more!
Overall Rating: 5/5 – we went back the next day because it was so delicious.
Get The: T.R.U.F. Supreme fries, McCruelty Free, & Crispy Lemon Shrimpz
Amsterdam holds a very sweet special place in my heart now and I would love to return and get more vegan travel on. They’ve opened up so many more vegan restaurants and they even have a completely vegan grocery store now. I love how progressive they all are. I will definitely be returning!

This was amazing that you could take a beautiful vacation and still enjoy your own lifestyle of being Vegan. I have not yet taken the plunge but this certainly helped me move in this direction. I am a Vegan to be. Or Vegan in training. Thanks for sharing.
Aw I love that! Let me know if there’s any way I can help you on your vegan journey. <3
That is so cool that the guy runs everything in the restaurant on his own! It sounds like a lot of work, but also sounds like he has a good handle on it.
So much work! But he killed it. And he plans it out perfectly with reservation times and menu items. So brilliant!
