Ok so Acid Reflux is no joke you guys. Acid reflux is when your stomach acid creates a backward flow up through your esophagus. And more times than not you’ll have a burning sensation through your throat/chest/stomach area.
It’s really uncomfortable and it will consume your mind with thoughts on how to find some form of relief.
Things I’ve Tried For Relief (But They Didn’t Work)
- Water – It seems like all you would need is a simple little water relief but it only makes it worse.
- Cold – Ice Cubes, frozen cherries, popsicles, Breyer’s Vegan Cookies & Cream Ice Cream, I’ve tried all of the cold and they all just make it worse!!!
- DGL – Which is pretty much black liquorice which is used to treat heartburn/acid reflux
- Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)
- Warm teas, the list really goes on and on…
Nothing Works!!!
* Also to note, I am not a doctor and I am not telling you what to do, I’m just sharing my personal experience with my acid reflux journey *
Let me back things up a bit, I didn’t always get acid reflux. Most people don’t really start to develop acid reflux until they’re older and nearly one-fourth of people over the age of 75 are on some type of heartburn medication.
About 2.5/3 years ago is when I started to develop it. And it was when I was stressed to the MAX! I was on a super stressful Disney movie and we were getting an average of 4 hours of sleep a night so there was a lot of caffeine around & unhealthy foods.
That’s when it started!!!
So basically I’m working on this Disney movie and not sleeping or eating right and now my freaken stomach/esophagus is killing me. That movie wraps/finishes shooting and then I go on to do the next SAW movie and it’s a much less stressful environment so this is when I start to key in on what triggers my acid reflux.
Things That Trigger!!!
- Caffeine – Teas really help keep me awake on those long days on set
- Alcohol – Red wine especially
- Chocolate – Dang all around right?
- Spice – No more hot sauce ☹️
- Pasta Sauce/Tomatoes – Kill kill kills me!
- Too much water – My favourite thing in the whole world!!!
- Citrus
- Carbonation
- Fried Foods – Set food is pretty crappy in terms of being good for you, so I do try to bring my own
So basically everything that I was doing was a trigger to this new ailment. So I did what any rational person would do in my predicament and I GOOGLED it!
WHAT IS ACID REFLUX?
WHAT CAUSES ACID REFLUX?
WHAT TO EAT TO STOP ACID REFLUX?
Of course it took some trial and error and more searching but I finally found it…
Sauerkraut 🙌
Freaken fermented, sour, kinda yummy Sauerkraut! Now I like sauerkraut but having to eat it every day can be a bummer BUT it is worth it because Sauerkraut really does work.
I’ve found it to help if I eat a tablespoon or two a day when I’me having a flair up and it goes a way. After that if I keep up on it every other day to once a week, I’ve noticed I don’t get it at all.
Who would have thought Sauerkraut right? Well, if you think about it, it’s kind of obvious because the fermented cabbage helps improve your digestion while filling your stomach with lots of probiotics. Even though I take a daily probiotic, there’s nothing like the power of a fermented vegetable.
My Love Hate For Sauerkraut
So here I am, acid reflux free, yay!
But then a predicament occurred, my husband and I went on a mini holiday where we were drinking wine and eating all of the foods! So here comes my best nemesis, ACID REFLUX!
Let me tell you the inconvenience of trying to find sauerkraut is real. Not every grocery store carries sauerkraut surprising enough, or even kimchi or other fermented foods for that matter. It took multiple grocery store visits before we finally found one tiny bottle, SUCCESS 🎉
So while I love Sauerkraut for how much it has helped me, I hate having to carry it around with me all of the time. It’s not fun bringing a jar with you and hoping there’s a fridge for it because it can smell real foul real quick when it gets warm. 😹
Enter My Second Fav Acid Reflux Remedy
A.Vogel’s Digestive Aid
I’ve been putting these bad boys to the test! I haven’t been eating any sauerkraut and I’ve been taking 2 pills once a day whenever I felt it coming on (Not every day). And I have to be honest with you all, IT WORKS!
It works and I am so so so happy that it does! I will still continue to eat the sauerkraut because it’s good for me and I like it but I am so happy that now I can carry around a bottle of little tablets instead of a stinky fermented wet cabbage. 😹🙌
These tablets are different than traditional digestive enzymes. They’re a bit more powerful and they’re not meant to be taken every single day with every meal for the rest of your life. They’re a great way to cleanse your liver and if you had a little too much to drink, “take 2 before bed for a better tomorrow” and thank me later. 😜

My Journey Through Acid Reflux – And Tips To Help Your Struggle – A Blog About Stuff
My bf gets bad acid reflux! I am going to get him to try these.
When I think of acid reflux, I think of all my four pregnancies and the accompanying hyperemesis, heart burn and so on! I am glad that period of my life is over. And thanks for this great post it is absolutely informative
So glad you don’t have to deal with that anymore!
Great tips ! Did not know sauerkraut helps with acid reflux.Wow!
Acid reflux is no fun! I’ve learned what foods cause it…those high in sugar…and avoid those.
I had a spell of acid reflux when I was pregnant. Very uncomfortable!
I had absolutely no idea that sauerkraut helps with acid reflux! Mind. Blown! I can vouch for the digestive aids though… as I suffer from a lot of food sensitivities. Acid reflux was worse for me during pregnancy, but also comes up every now and again.
I know right?! When I learned about sauerkraut I was so surprised and so relieved.
Wow, I had no idea about sauerkraut! I wish I would have known this when I was pregnant and my reflux was bad. Luckily I haven’t had it since but these are great tips!
Thanks for these tips! I think you’re helping a lot of people with this info!
Oh man I hope so, it really is an awful struggle.
This is such valuable information for people with acid reflux!
Ugh my acid reflux was so bad when I was pregnant. I’d never had it before. And after my second pregnancy, it stuck around. Wah! I’ll still experience it occasionally. Especially after acidic foods like tomato sauce. Glad you found something that works! I’ll have to look into sauerkraut and A. Vogel!
I have heard that it can creep up with pregnancies. Must be extra uncomfortable!
I struggled with acid reflux throughout pregnancy. Literally nothing helped except sleeping sitting up. It’s not an easy thing to live with.
Ugh, I can only imagine going through it while pregnant too ☹️
I will pass this on to my husband. Hoping this helps him as much as it has helped you!
I didn’t know about the sauerkraut, that’s definitely better than taking a prescription every day.
Exactly! Those prescriptions can sometimes just lead to a whole whack of other messes.
Wow, I’m so sorry for your experience with acid reflux. I had a couple but because I laid down to fast after eating. I’m starting to take out gluten and fried foods out of my diet but it’s really hard for me.
I actually wanted to make sauerkraut before but never made it, my procrastinator side… but nice tips for me to know! I’m not excited for this to happen to me when I’m older!
Haha yes laying down after eating can definitely upset the tummy. Isn’t it crazy how many older people get this? So sad!
These are great tips and I’m sure that they will help others in this same situation.
My husband struggled with acid reflux for years. Taking acid pills was a daily thing. When he stopped smoking, the reflux disappeared to the point that he can now eat and enjoy spicy food with no problem.
Yes! Smoking is also a big trigger. Glad quitting helped him!
Acid Reflux is the worst. I had it when I was in High School and then when I was pregnant. Luckily, it has calmed down now!
So important to get reflux under control before the inflammation leads to cell changes. Great job!
Totally! Or damages the stomach lining or esophagus. So awful.
I’ve heard sauerkraut works, but I’ve never tried it. I will next time.
Glad sauerkraut has made the difference! I’ve used it for digestion in the past, but I’m luck enough not to have acid reflux.
So sorry that you have been struggling with this but it sounds like you have tried everything and have found some relief… I will have to give Vogel’s at try!
This so was so informative. My husband suffers from acid reflux so these are great suggestions for him to try. Thanks for sharing.
Oh man, I hope they help him. It’s really no fun at all.
Great tips! I struggled with reflux and an ulcer for years. Your list of things that make reflux worse is basically my list of favorite things (wine, chocolate, caffeine, fried foods)! For me, the best solution was a restrictive anti-inflammatory diet (which I could do for a few weeks but not for more). Since that wasn’t a long term fix, a combo of probiotics and intense Chinese acupuncture worked for me. However, I am really interested in the digestive support tablets and will be checking them out as well. Thanks!
All of my fav foods too girl haha. The best tasting foods are always the worst for us. But yes! When I eat cleaner/alkaline I really have less of a hard time with it. But… I can’t eat like that when I’m working bc it requires too much prep time and I just don’t have it. That’s super interesting about the acupuncture, I’m going to look into that too.
I haven’t experienced such acid-reflux thankfully, I wouldn’t like to stay away from spices and coffee 🙂 and I don’t really like saukeraut. good to know the tablets work for you!
Acid Reflux is a big problem for me! I can control it with my diet, but sometimes that’s no fun. I like sauerkraut, but not that often. I plan to try the A. Vogel. Thanks for the tip.
Oh my pleasure. I’m the same with the sauerkraut, like it’s good, I like it, but not every single day haha. I don’t even like ice cream every single day
Great tips!! I worked a very stressful jobs where I drank a ton of coffee and didn’t get lunch breaks and had some of the same issues. Will have to give this a try!
It’s crazy how our bodies tell us we’re not treating it right. Hope these work for you too!
I’ve had a little bit of reflux lately even though I don’t eat many of those things…except lots of water! That could totally be the reason! It’s something new I’m dealing with, so this is a great article!
I was surprised by the water because it’s something I crave all of the time. It seemed to trigger it more so when I was running on an empty stomach, the excess water somehow stirred it up.
