Initial Reaction to this vegan beauty item:
I had high hopes for this new vegan beauty item. It has countless great reviews, it has a clean beauty certification, and it claims to be lengthening, volumizing, & long wearing.
I think it’s important to try and wear as much clean beauty as possible & anything that goes around the eyes should be top priority.
So needless to say, I was excited to try this mascara out and to see what all of the hype was about.
Usage:
The formula is thick, let me just start with that. If you’ve ever tried Too Faced’s Better Than Sex mascara, it’s kind of like that but on a rubber spoolie instead of brush fibres.
The thing is, I really like the application of Better Than Sex so I had high hopes that this would be a cleaner version of something I already love.
My Lash Concerns:
- My lash tips are blonde so anything that will make them look longer
- I like a slight lift but nothing too dramatic
- I don’t like my lashes to clump together
Vegan Beauty Claims:
“The ONE truly clean mascara that does it all: volumizes, defines, lengthens, lifts, and wears all day.”
Lawless
Research Results: Results of the LAWLESS consumer perception study showed:
- Instant Volume upon application: 97%
- As volumizing as regular mascara: 94%
- Helped lashes look longer: 93%
- Filled in and Filled Out Lashes: 90%
Benefits: Lengthening, Long-Wearing, Volumizing, Smudge-Proof, No Silicones
♡ 100% Vegan, Paraben-Free, Sulfate-Free, Silicone-Free, Talc-Free, Gluten-Free, Cruelty-Free, Made with Recyclable Packaging.
Results:
With a little, or a lot rather, of finessing, I was able to get this mascara to a place that I was happy with. The problem is, there are so many great mascaras out there that don’t need an extra finesse. So spending all of that extra time seems silly.
To get it where I like it, I took a disposable mascara wand & rubbed it along the Lawless wand. This allowed me to pick up far less mascara that’s on the applicator wand allowing for a cleaner & less clumpy application.
You can also use the Lawless wand and just wipe off the excess in the mascara tubes opening. But, you’ll probably still want to have a clean spoolie to help separate your lashes after.
Final Thoughts:
Honestly, I really wanted to love this because;
- It’s Vegan & Cruelty Free
- It’s Clean Beauty
- It’s made w. Recyclable Packaging
- It seemed like a Clean dupe for Better Than Sex
But unfortunately, this mascara fell short. There is way too much product on the applicator spoolie. It is hard to clean it off and keep the packaging looking nice. The formula does lengthen but it clumps your lashes together so I don’t think it’s volumizing.
I think that if they switched to an old school application wand this formula would perform much better.
Also, as you can see in the photo above, later that day the mascara was quite smudgey , flakey & just did not hold up all day long.
Will I Re-Purchase?
I don’t think so 😥. There are just better performing options out there.
Where to Buy this vegan beauty item?
Remember, every person is different & this might be your go-to die-hard mascara and that is ok! What works for you might not work for me & vice-versa. So please, test things out on your own and just use my years of experience with products and my opinion as something to keep an eye out for, that’s all.
And this is by no means any shade to Lawless, they make some incredible clean vegan makeup!

A final note:
Lawless is 100% Cruelty Free but not all of their items are vegan. You can easily find all of their vegan items by either, reading the ingredients list & looking for the clearly labelled vegan note OR by simply typing in Vegan in the search bar on their site. All of their vegan products will then be displayed.
I believe that the only items that aren’t vegan are their eyeshadow palettes.
What a great way to expand vegan efforts – I usually only think about this being purely focused on diet but you can support a vegan lifestyle outside of the kitchen!
Exactly! Veganism is about more than just diet.
I appreciate your review! I don’t like clumpy mascara either. I’d pass on this one.
I have a really hard time finding mascara that I like. Thanks for this great review.
Mascara can be a hard one! My pleasure to share my findings with you ☺️
We love the honest review! Thank you for sharing.
Oh, I love your video. I’m not a fan of clumping either. I love lengthening and thickening and always feel like I have to pick one or the other. Boo! Can’t a girl get both?! LOL! And wow on your smudge test after a day of wear… that’s a lot of smudge/residue. Since going vegan I’ve experimented with several mascaras and finally found one that’s winning (for the moment). I’m still always on the hunt for others!
Right?! They all claim they do both & then some when in reality we maybe get 1 feature haha.
I still love the Better Than Sex & the Emani one is great but they should all be freaken great! haha
I love all the make-up reviews. I love that you are honest about what you think too! That helps me. I love good clean products that don’t take a lot of work!
My pleasure! I don’t want anyone wasting their money on products that aren’t that great!
I will be very honest – I never even thought to check if my cosmetic products were vegan! I appreciate your honesty in this product review, and will probably make my purchase decision accordingly. You are so beautiful! Thank you for the other mascara suggestions, as well.
Aw thank you so much! I always feel bad when a product doesn’t work bc I want it to work. And I feel worse when ppl end up wasting money so I always want to be super honest with my reviews. Fortunately more & more companies are creating vegan & cruelty free lines as well.
I am so picky about mascara, so thank you for the trial and your opinion!
I think mascara is one of the more personal makeups. We can all usually make a foundation work, even if it’s not our fav but a mascara that doesn’t agree with your oils or your lash needs, well that can ruin your whole face!
I love how genuine and honest you were on your review. Look like a good Vegan option, but like you said, there is so much mascara available. I like the Arbonne one.
I have heard really good things about that one too but have yet to try it! You’ve convinced me, I’m going to! haha thx
Aww dang, I’m sorry this mascara fell short. I know what you mean though about picking something just as good with less work.
There are too many products nowadays to justify having to work so hard
Love the honesty and the tips to make it work better!
Wow. Thanks for this fantastic review and for saving me the money of buying something that won’t work for me. I’m sure it would’ve worked better after the bottle wasn’t so full, but who wants to do everything you had to do to get to that point?
Right? And I wonder if it would just dry out before it even gets to a less full consistency. Just not worth the hassle.
